No one else that plays for the Detroit Tigers will wear the #1 ever again.
The Tigers have announced that Lou Whitaker’s #1 will be officially retired before the team’s Saturday, August 6th game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Whitaker played for the Tigers from 1977-1995 earning five All-Star bids (1983-87), A.L. Rookie of the Year (1978), three Gold Glove Awards (1983-85), and four Silver Slugger Awards (1983-85 and 1987). Whitaker was also a member of the 1984 team that captured the World Series Championship.
Now, if we can just get him into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
