Jeff Blashill Out As Red Wings Head Coach, Two Assistant Coaches Also Let Go

The Detroit Red Wings finished their 2021-22 campaign on Friday night with a 5-3 road victory over the New Jersey Devils to finish with a 32-40-10 record, good for sixth in the eight-team Atlantic Division.

The next day, General Manager Steve Yzerman wasted no time in making sweeping changes to the coaching staff that included not renewing the contract of Head Coach Jeff Blashill after seven teams with the Red Wings.

During his seven seasons in Detroit, Blashill compiled a 204-261-72 record and made the postseason in his first season during the 2015-16 season in which the Red Wings were bounced the first round by the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games. The Red Wings have not made the playoffs since that season.

The only coach that currently remains on the Red Wings staff is Alex Tanguay, who Yzerman hired last offseason.

Blashill spent 11 seasons with the Red Wings organization that began in the 2011-12 season serving one year as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock. Blashill also was the head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins from 2012-15 winning the Calder Cup during the 2012-13 season.

Red Wings fans, do you like the move, and who would you like to see replace Blashill behind the bench beginning next season?
