Jakub Vrana placed on and clears waivers, to stay in Red Wings organization with Grand Rapids

In a somewhat surprising move, the Detroit Red Wings placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers Tuesday at 2 pm, meaning teams had 24 hours to claim him while taking on the remainder of his contract.

Vrana’s currently in the second year of a three-year, $15.75 million contract signed prior to the 2021-22 season.

With the 24-hour window officially passed, none of the other 31 NHL teams claimed him, so as of now, the native of the Czech Republic will stay in the Red Wings organization with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning stint.

Since coming over in the Anthony Mantha trade during the 2020-21 season, the soon-to-be 27-year-old has appeared in just 39 games totaling 22 goals and 10 assists to go with a minus-six rating.
