Steve Yzerman tried to trade former first-round pick Filip Zadina following his request, but no one wanted him.
Then, Yzerman had no choice but to do this:
Twenty-four hours later:
Now, the Detroit Red Wings are at the point where they will wait and see if Zadina can earn a spot on the roster next season.
If not, he’ll need to clear waivers once more before getting sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The 23-year-old native of the Czech Republic was drafted by Ken Holland and the Red Wings with the 6th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
Since getting drafted, Zadina has skated in 190 games with Detroit totaling just 28 goals and 40 assists to go with a minus-51 rating.
At the American Hockey League level with the Griffins, Zadina has appeared in 82 games notching 26 goals and 26 assists to go with a minus-25 rating.
Zadina currently has two years remaining on a three-year, $5.475 million contract he signed last offseason.
We might as well just say it, Zadina is probably going to be viewed as one of the biggest draft busts of all-time given where he was drafted.
Thanks, Ken Holland.
