The Detroit Red Wings capped off the 2023-24 season with a trio of 5-4 overtime/shootout victories to finish the campaign with 91 points and a tie with the Washington Capitals for the final Wild Card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
However, due to having fewer regulation victories than the Capitals, it would be them who would get the last playoff spot after Washington staked a 2-1 road win over Philadelphia on Tuesday night that featured the Flyers pulling their goalie with a few minutes left in regulation with the game tied at 1-1 to try and keep their respective playoff hopes alive with a regulation win.
The Red Wings finished this season with a 41-32-9 overall record and reaching 40+ wins in a season for the first time since they last made the playoffs in 2015-16 (41 wins).
For those fans out there so continue to be skeptical about the “Yzerplan” through Steve Yzerman’s first five seasons back with the Red Wings organization, below is the Red Wings’ record by season since “The Captain” has taken over the general managerial duties:
2019-20 – 17-49-5 overall (39 points – Last in Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference)
2020-21 – 19-27-10 overall (48 points – Tied for last in Central Division)
2021-22 – 32-40-10 overall (74 points – 6th in Atlantic Division and 12th in Eastern Conference)
2022-23 – 35-37-10 overall (80 points – 7th in Atlantic Division and 12th in Eastern Conference)
2023-24 – 41-32-9 overall (91 points – 5th in Atlantic Division and 9th in Eastern Conference)
Next season, we think that all Red Wings fans are putting to the table a “Playoffs or Bust” expectation for the organization given how close they came to making it this season.
