Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman had a busy weekend to say the least that began on Friday evening in trading for New York Islanders Defenseman Nick Leddy in exchange for Forward Richard Panik and a 2021 second-round pick in the NHL Draft.

The 30-year-old defenseman helped the Islanders reach the semifinals in back-to-seasons and was a 2013 Stanley Cup winner as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Yzerman then continued his busy weekend with having to solidify his protection list in preparation for Wednesday’s Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft. The players that were left unprotected are available to be selected by the Kraken. Below is the Red Wings’ protection list:
Also available, among others, are Ds Stecher and DeKeyser and Fs Namestnikov, Nielsen and Svechnikov. But can’t see Seattle taking anybody other than Cholowski or maybe Stecher, who has one year remaining on contract.

The 2021 NHL Draft takes this weekend on July 23rd (first round) and July 24th (rounds two through seven).
